It has not been long ago when the soft drink manufacturers started to market their products in PET bottles. Such type of packaging brought convenience to the consumers, which in turn contributed to market expansion of soft drink brands. However, no initiative was taken for safe disposal of the used bottles. PET bottles are not biodegradable and indiscriminate littering, which has been in practice till today, will cause serious environmental pollution.

When the indiscriminate use and disposal of polythene bags created an environmental problem the government imposed a ban on its production. The move is regarded as a success story of the current government. However, a similar blanket ban on the production and use of PET bottles will not be a viable option. The only available option is to establish a recycling process and develop recycling culture among the people.

Now, it is up to the government and the manufacturers to act proactively and prevent a serious environmental problem. Will they act before it is too late?
