Plight of teachers

It is really a pity to know that the people who are engaged in the most noble profession for building the nation, I mean the teachers, are so poorly paid that they cannot even manage two square meals a day. It is also painful to learn from the newspapers that these teachers have not seen a raise in their salaries for the last 32 years while government servants in other professions not only got substantial raise in their salaries but with lot of perks! (what a discrimination)? We all know that the present government is trying its best to improve the standard of education in the country and for that they made the highest allocations in budget for the education sector. However, the government remained indifferent to the plight of the teachers. It is also depressing to see pictures of the teachers published in the newspapers who have vowed to fast unto death if their legitimate demands are not met by the government. May I remind the people who are in the leadership how much money they spend on their sons and daughters who are studying in foreign countries or in some respectable private schools or universities of Bangladesh and how much their teachers get as salary ? I feel that the government should not waste time by holding out false hopes to the aggrieved teachers.

Rather, the government should yield to their demands in order to maintain the teachers' dignity and their eagerness to work. Let us not make them the disgraced outcast of the society.
