Police do help

I thank Mr Humayun Hyder of Uttara for his kind appreciation of good police work. This sort of appreciation will definitely encourage the police to perform their job with equanimity. It is unfortunate to note that no department or agency of the government is more subjected to open and bitter criticism and denunciation than is police service. The media, both print and the electronic, often attempt to ridicule the performance of the police. This reminds me of a famous remark by the late US President John F Kennedy. While addressing the CIA officials he once said, "Your failures are trumpeted while your successes are unheralded."

We are aware of the fact that any lapse in the enforcement of laws and failure to detect any case invite criticism both from the press and the members of the public. Any act of corruption by the police also raises an outcry. We often tend to forget the reality that police personnel are very much part of our society which cannot be called an ideal one by any judgement.

But in spite of many limitations police do work and try to help the people. A few inspiring words regarding the service of the police as made by Mr Humayun Hyder will boost up the morale and standard of the police. There is a saying "A society has the kind of police it deserves, because it may get any kind it wants". In line with the reformation and transformation of the society, we may also need to reform the police service.
