Powerful abroad, weak at home

Our hearts go out to the people of the US State of Louisiana, particularly of New Orleans and the surrounding conurbation, because of the distress that they have been thrown into by 'Katrina.' Perhaps nobody more than a Bangladeshi can relate more to the sufferings and agony that the unfortunate people of the area are going through and may have to go through for many more weeks if not months. We in Bangladesh have had our share of natural disasters and similar experiences as those in New Orleans.

But what is astounding and disheartening is to see the very slow mobilisation of relief activities by the various US agencies. To see the most powerful nation in the world reduced to near helplessness in the face of Nature's wrath is as surprising as it is sobering. While the government of the United States has been extremely swift and unrelenting in its operations in occupying a third country, it has proved an utter failure in providing relief and succour to the suffering millions in its own country.

Five days after the disaster only reinforce my belief that Nature is a great leveller. The US has been powerful abroad but weak at home.

I call upon not only the government but also the affluent in Bangladesh to come forward in whatever little way to help the people of America, who had never been wanting in their help and support during our times of need.

Nobody can accuse us of being poor at heart.

We, from Bangladesh, are expressing our deepest sympathy for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi and many other places. May Allah help them.
