A prediction

A few days back, one of our professors asked some of his students how many divisions there are in Bangladesh? Couple of students raised their hands. Ignoring them the teacher asked a student (who went to an English medium school) to answer. She replied in the negative. Another English medium student replied the same, but a Bangla medium student answered "64 divisions".

Another day, during his lecture a teacher asked the students about Ekushey February? Some were surprised to hear such a question and some were confused whether it was our victory day or not. Someone from the back-bench answered that it is the International Mother Language Day.

The pictures depicted above are real incidents at one of the top universities of Bangladesh. Students from various educational backgrounds (Bangla, English and Madrasah) along with foreign students are studying there. So just by being there, one can easily get a view of all different educational systems.

It was expected that all the students would know these answers not for being university students but for being Bangladeshi nationals.

I think whatever the educational system is, every student must have mandatory courses on country's history, culture etc. It is no way acceptable that a mature citizen of Bangladesh who has the 'privilege' of higher education is unaware of or confused about facts that are inseparable from national identity.

If we fail to teach the young the country's glorious history and culture, we will surely loss our identity as Bangladeshis soon.
