Price spiral

Though price spiral is a common news item in the newspapers, it is not a simple matter that can be ignored. The prices of the commodities are reaching new heights with every passing day. Every time when we go to the market we have to hear the same thing - the price has risen again. The retailers of the market are pointing their fingers at the wholesale operators who, in turn, blame the importers for the price hike.

Two or three days ago I read in The Daily Star that one sales manager of a reputed baby food company accused inflation and the fall of the taka against Australian dollar for the price hike of milk powder. Inflation might be a cause, but has our salary increased a little bit for the inflation? Obviously not. The people of limited income go to market with the same amount of money and return with fewer goods.

In our neighbouring country, India, if prices of anything increase by half a rupee people take to the street to protest and the government has to re-fix the price. We have also seen bus fare being decreased In India. Can we really think of anything like that in Bangladesh? In such a position our lives are getting harder day by day. Our finance minister cut a joke about our misery recently when he said why people cannot buy expensive food when they were building costly houses. It seems our leaders will never realise the problems that we are facing.

We are the citizens of this country. We have the right to get thing at a fair price. Our government has to take the initiative to control the market or raise our real income.
