Probashi letters on Bangladesh politics
I have nothing against the Probashi brothers expressing their opinions - we hope that they would play an active role and contribute their ideas, which are often based on the broad exposure they have and higher expectations of economy and political institutions. But, we should always treat their observations with caution as well; while they may express pleasure at seeing in Bangladesh some of the luxuries they are used to as normal (highways, big cars, high-end telephone service and shopping malls) they often lose perspective that this is only available to a small minority here in Bangladesh. It is not possible to gain an accurate perspective during a whistle-stop tour, on the law and order situation, communal environment, price of staples relative to our wages, health access, and difficulties facing our children' education and power shortage.
These are much more important issues to the vast majority of Bangladeshis than the luxury items now available to a tiny section of the elite, and the overseas Bangladeshis who on their short visits to the country have the spending power to enjoy them.
