Today we, as usual, are celebrating the 33rd anniversary of Victory Day in a befitting manner. But the questions of the day are Is the freedom we are enjoying the real freedom? Does liberty only mean liberty from foreign rule? Are we really imbued with the spirit of Liberation War? We all know the answers to these rhetorical questions. Then what is the profit of all these lectures, vows and chanting slogans in the huge procession on particular days? For fine words butter no parsnips. We are yet in the clutch of abject poverty, illiteracy, stabbing corruption, terrorism, redtapism and monga. The mass people are the toys in the hands of some politicians, bureaucrats and hoodlums. Some politicians plea for the spirit of Liberation War while others the spirit of Islam. But are they themselves imbued with those spirits? Both these spirits demand poverty, corruption, and terrorism-free serene and secured society where egalitarianism, equipoise and equanimity among the people will prevail.

Our numerous theories to trim down poverty and corruption remain stick fast to papers only. Poverty alleviation, millennium goal and other blabs appear to be spurious and fake when we throw a glance on Rajshahi and the contiguous areas. Have we taken bold and long-term steps to cope with monga barring falsely demonstrative distributions of some relief to the victims? The lion's share of national wealth is confined to few bigwigs. Wherever we go, we stumble at ravenous corruption and redtapism. Concerns over violation of human rights are awfully increasing. Empowerment of women is yet to be ensured. The Jatiya Sangsad's recent enactment of a law on women representation in the has only added fuel to the scenario. The bureaucrats are distorting the orders of the Supreme Court. All these grubby things are happening here in our country. Did the martyrs and freedom fighters dream it? Can we yet say that we have got freedom?

How long will we remain Yahoos (irrational beings)? It is high time we should fend off the allegation that we are 'the most pernicious race of little odious vermin that Nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the earth.' and realize and materialize the dreams of the freedom fighters. So today we should vow that we must overcome our yahoo-state. And only then we can hope for the real freedom.
