Reducing traffic congestion
The Daily Star has recently published a report on traffic jam based on a study by BUET. According to the study, traffic congestion eats up around five million working hours every day and costs the economy thousands of crores of taka every year. The causes of congestion identified in the study include the absence of a mass bus transit system. In addition, the study points out, private cars are gradually replacing buses. The lack of sufficient road space, inefficient traffic management system, etc. are also contributing to congestion.
While the government has undertaken some big projects, the experts say some low-cost projects would significantly improve the situation. We urge the government to pay heed to the experts.
