Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) double-deckers are not operating in Chittagong for more than two decades. More than 40 lakh people live in this city area. A huge number of them are dependent on public transport. So, the BRTC authorities introduced 4 BRTC double-deckers in 1990 to alleviate people's sufferings.

But private bus and minibus owners became desperate to thwart the move. At last the BRTC bus service was withdrawn from the city area in October 1993. As a result, commuters have been facing serious trouble.

Now total mismanagement is prevailing in the transport sector in Chittagong Metropolis. Owners of private buses and minibuses are taking full advantage of the people's distress.

The BRTC authorities should immediately take steps to introduce their buses in Chittagong city.
