Response to OH Kabir

In response to OH Kabir's letter in which he claims peace loving Americans protested the Iraq war, then "turned around and put a golden crown on the head of Bush," Mr. Kabir's analysis of the situation is incomplete, if not completely naive. I am a Bengali living in America, and John Kerry received the most votes of any presidential candidate in the country's history, except for George W. Bush. Peace loving Americans came out and voted more -- but so did everyone else. Young people came out in record numbers and voted for John Kerry -- but everyone in America came out in larger numbers. The many state level votes on gay marriage ensured that American conservatives would come to the polls and vote. The feeling among the peace loving Americans is not that they "turned around" and voted for Bush -- they feel that they did everything possible, but the social conservatives came out and drowned out their voices. America is no more one homogenous political or social mass anymore than Bangladesh is.

And while I agree many US actions around the world are unjust, US "threats" to North Korea are too little, not enough. The North Korean government is a grave threat not only to its own people, but to South Korea, and Japan. Though US actions are never so selfless as to help even countries they are duty bound to protect, its haphazard engagement with North Korea is criminally negligent to its Asian neighbours.
