Save the cattle traders

Every year on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, hundreds of sacrificial cows and goats are brought to different cattle markets in Dhaka for sale. Similarly, many cattle traders from various parts of the country go to far distant places, village cattle markets/hats and border areas to purchase herds of cows and goats and bring them to various towns and localities of their own choice for sale.

On the way to cattle markets for purchasing cattle and on the way back home after selling cows and goats and collecting the sale proceeds, the traders/sellers carry cash money with them. The traders/sellers are often robbed of cash money by criminals lying in wait. The police and the law enforcing authorities fail to recover the stolen/robbed money. As such, many traders/sellers lose their life long earnings.

We strongly feel that the government should do something pragmatic and constructive to save the cash money of the cattle traders/sellers from the hands of the extortionists, and criminals of every other denomination.

In this connection, we suggest that the government may kindly open some special and temporary bank branches in important cattle markets. The traders/sellers may deposit their cash money with the said special bank branch and in exchange the bank may hand over a special bank draft which the traders/sellers may easily cash in their respective district/upazila bank. At the time of depositing the cash money, a trader/seller may submit two copies of full-size photographs, furnish his full name and address, his specimen signature or thumb impression and also the name and address of the ward commissioner/union council chairman of his area in a prescribed form supplied by the bank.
