Just a few days back many of the national dailies published a photograph in their first pages which shot a young girl swimming through the flood waters holding a packet of saline in between her teeth. No caption was necessary to illustrate the importance of this life saving supply and its dire need that has grabbed the poor flood victims.

UNDP fears that diarrhoea may turn into epidemic with approximately ten thousands victims being added every day. What is most important in diarrhoea is quick administration of oral saline. So what we need now to save those people is not tens or hundreds but millions of packets of oral saline every day. To our utter shock a packet of saline which used to cost only Tk 3 , is now sold between Tk 5 to 20 and those who are doing it are also human beings.

I think it's time for the saline manufacturing companies as reputed as SMC and others to respond to the need of humanity and reduce the price of it and also donate this life saving elixir to the people in dire distress.
