A social nuisance
Beggars pestering city dwellers have become a common sight. The first shocking sights after landing at the airport are the malnourished disabled beggars. In front of government offices, educational institutions, movie houses, public markets, railway stations, bus terminals, playgrounds and in all busy road intersections, beggars are to be found . They have become a social nuisance. Nowhere in the world are the beggars so innovative and daring. Some would pretend to be blind and some others would splash their forehead with dye to make them look horrifying. Often, some beggars hire malnourished children to draw sympathy.
The Ministry of Social Welfare should set up rehabilitation centres at the district level for the rehabilitation of the disabled beggars . The centres should manage treatment as well as provide income generation training schemes for the disabled. The goal is not diffi- cult to achieve. We have everything in place. An initiative in the right direction is all that is needed.
