Reckless driving of motor cars, trucks and buses in the streets of Dhaka is a public danger. Pedestrians are often knocked down and sometimes run over by the trucks running at a very high speed. An old man was knocked down at the crossing near the secretariat in Dhaka recently. Luckily, however, the accident was not so fatal. Accidents of this kind are almost daily occurrences. The public, being the sufferers, should move the city authorities to put a stop immediately to this dangerous practice.There are penalties for exceeding the speed limit while driving, but such offences are most often either ignored or not punished in connivance with the police. It is high time the Municipal authorities took a serious view of the matter and applied the laws more strictly.
