Allow me, at the very outset, to thank your columnist for taking interest in the political development of Nepal. His article in your paper, however, seems to have been written without enough factual or correct information or a very clear understanding of the ongoing political situation in Nepal. This is apparent from his argument that the offer made by His Majesty the King to talk with the political parties doesn't contain anything substantive to resolve the crisis.

Of late, people of Nepal have been the victims of terrorism, and riots, strikes, disruptions, vandalism, corruption and politicisation of all aspects of the social fabric, compound their sufferings. People of Nepal are fed up with these and what they want is a meaningful democracy.

"…release of opposition leaders and activists including octogenarian former Premier Girija Prasad Koirala from custody may assuage the feelings of the opposition to some extent and pave the way for a discussion with the government", says the writer. The factual position is that no opposition leader and Girija Prasad Koirala, in particular, are in custody.

He says that the Prime Minister was sacked in February this year. In fact, Mr. Deuba, the then Prime Minister, was removed from his Office because he failed to live up to his promise to hold parliamentary elections and initiate action, which could bring about peace in the country. He was simply buying time to cling to power without the mandate of the people. One should not forget that he was the person who had vowed to bring peace and conduct elections while recommending the dissolution of the Parliament. Indeed, it is under his recommendation that the Parliament was dissolved.

I would like to inform the author that His Majesty the King has been trying relentlessly to restore peace in the country by touring various districts of the country and listening to the views of the people. Next week, the King is embarking on a tour of the two southern zones of the country. All his efforts are directed towards restoring peace and holding elections in the country in order to restore democracy, strengthen the democratic institutions, and ensure that democracy gains a firm foothold in the country.
