Tsunami vs. cricket

Is the free media in Bangladesh being taken over by popular journalism? At least when I saw the newspaper headlines on the morning of 27th December, I had that fear.

We always over-celebrate our rare cricket victories. But delegating the Tsunami news to a 3rd tier news to give banner headlines on Bangladesh's ODI victory over India was tasteless journalism. Even days after the event the newspapers failed to reflect on the magnitude of the event.

Surprisingly, Bangladesh has not been affected that badly this time, while the rest of the region has been devastated. It was a surprise considering the vulnerability of the low-lying coastal areas of Bangladesh. The nation still does not know how Bangladesh escaped. Was it the effect of the coastal embankments built after the 1991 cyclone? Or was it nature's mercy to Bangladesh?
