'UGC and foreign affiliated university'
It refers to the news item 'Foreign university campus goes without approval' published recently in an English language daily. A US-based private university has enrolled some thirty students in its overseas campus in Uttara. The 'director of the campus' of the university claims that they 'do not need any approval of UGC'. "The UGC is 'watching' the developments and will take action at the 'appropriate' time." It brings back the memory of one of the private medical colleges in the Farmgate area. After four years of hard work, some 400 students learnt that their certificates would not be recognised as their college was not approved by the authorities concerned. Their lives were ruined. I can still remember their disappointment and anger. Some just could not believe what was happening and stood still like a rock.
It seems that UGC does not have the time to monitor all these. The officials can do afford time to participate in seminars organised by some 'in the business' private universities. The UGC should pull its socks up and stop waiting for the appropriate time. Else, some more students will meet with the same fate as that of the 'private college' in Farmgate.
