University education
But I would like to draw the attention of the UGC to another aspect of tertiary education in Bangladesh, viz, they agree that the public universities' fees are (ridiculously) low, thanks to the liberal subsidies given by the government in public interest. It is equally true that private universities, because of their high expenses incurred for hiring qualified teachers, cannot afford to charge anywhere near the level of the public universities. But, the tuition fees levied by some of the "Ivy League" schools have crossed the tolerance threshold of the guardians of our children. I know of one university, which even levies charges on the students for mobilising funds for their new campus. This surely is the limit!
At this point, something needs to be done by the government. There should be a regulatory authority for the private universities; the UGC could easily assume this role and play its part in overseeing the financial aspects of the management of these universities in the public interest. I do not suggest bureaucratic control but it cannot be totally open either. I wish more people would lend their support to this idea so that the sponsors of these universities are compelled to address the issues immediately.
