We are not heartless

With due respect, I want to write something about a "Letter to the Editor" with the heading "How heartless we are!" which was written by an army officer (name not mentioned), serving as an UN peacekeeper in Sierra Leone on behalf of our armed forces. He wanted to say that we are heartless and didn't pay due respect to our valiant peacekeepers dying in a plane crash in Benin.

But it's not true. We, his poor countryman, know how to pay due respect to our brave soldiers. The whole country mourned the deaths on the "National Mourning Day" declared on December 31,2003. Thousands of people gathered at the airport ignoring a cold stormy weather to pay their last homage to the soldiers of the country on that day. A number of letters were published in the newspapers following the tragedy. I thought he might have watched these events in television and read the articles published in newspapers on internet.

The civilians showed no misery to pay due respect to the heroes. So he cannot blame us for that. But for one thing he may blame the nation--the National Mourning Day was declared two days later, which should have been declared immediately after the mishap. But only for that reason he cannot blame us.

He should be proud of his motherland. Let us pray for the departed souls. May Allah, the Almighty, keep their souls in eternal peace.
