The BNP led alliance government is very jittery about the April 30 deadline. And the Awami League has no right to make any attempt to oust a democratically elected government by force. But, ostensibly, the BNP government has taken it seriously. To ward off any 'real threat', the government used the police force indiscriminately. The police were nabbing many innocent people. They harassed the public at bus stands , launch terminals and railway stations. It became a bonanza for the police force. They could intimidate the innocent people and earn an extra something. We are happy to learn that the ' mass arrests' plan has finally been abandoned by the government.

The government does not have to be anxious about the AL deadline as the people of Bangladesh gave it a five-year mandate to rule the country. If the BNP led government governs the country successfully, it may be re-elected. Otherwise, the voters will reject it flatly.

Before I end, I urge the government not to use the police as a political tool.
