Workers' rights

I write with reference to the recent riots by Bangladeshi workers in Kuwait. Whilst segments of locals and expatriates alike enjoy luxury and wealth beyond comparison in Gulf countries, others are treated as less than human.

Let us not forget that the privileged lifestyles of many depend on the efforts and sacrifices of these workers. The cities, fabulous buildings, and infrastructure have been built, literally, with the blood sweat and tears of the labourers and construction workers.

They should at the very least be paid their dues and receive respect and entitlements as human beings. Finally, I suggest some form of recognition for their services and contributions to the development and progress of Gulf countries is created, such as a plaque or monument.

We should be ashamed that we allow these forms of modern day slavery and human rights abuses to continue, whilst we look on and turn a blind eye and continue to live in the lap of luxury.
