Maulana Bhashani's daughter Mahmuda Khatun Bhashahi yesterday held a sit-in protest at Tangail Shaheed Minar, bringing allegations of irregularities in the Tangail municipality elections.

Mahmuda's son Mahmudul Haque Shanu was the BNP-nominated candidate in the election.

Alleging that there were widespread irregularities in the municipality elections held on January 30 to ensure ruling Awami League-nominated candidate's victory, she held the sit-in from 7:00pm till around 8:30pm on the Shaheed Minar premises demanding cancellation of the election and calling for a reelection of the Tangail municipality. Mahmudul also accompanied his mother.

She announced that a human chain will be formed in front of the Tangail Press Club today over the same demand, adding that fresh protest programmes will be announced after the human chain.

AL-nominated candidates won in all five municipality elections held in Tangail district.

In Tangail municipality, AL-candidate Sirajul Haque Khan Alamgir won by securing around three times more votes than BNP-nominated Mahmudul Haque Shanu.
