The other day a friend visiting from the UK declared, “None of my friends in Dhaka understands what a 'day off' means.”
My response, “Elaborate, please.”
Friend: “Well you guys are supposed to have day(s) off every week but every friend I've met during this vacation says something like, 'It's my day off but I'll just drop by at work for a short while; need to wrap something up.'”
Me: “That's just Dhaka. #EtaiLife”
Friend: “???”
Me: “Yes. In Dhaka, you leave home, not knowing when you'll reach work, or if you'll reach work at all. It's all about street life here. But your deadlines won't wait for you. You gotta do what you gotta do. Day off or not.”
