Ireland, chasing a revised target of 293 in 47 overs, were dismissed for 216, with Sri Lanka ODI debutant Dasun Shanaka taking five wickets.
Sri Lanka, after losing the toss, made 303 for seven with Dinesh Chandimnal scoring exactly 100 not out of 107 balls with seven boundaries. He got good support in partnerships of 82 with Kusal Mendis, 89 with captain Angelo Mathews (49) before rain interrupted Ireland's chase.
Victory saw Sri Lanka go 1-0 up in the two-match series ahead of the 2nd ODI, also in Malahide, on Saturday.
