Prominent sports journalist Ajoy Barua passed away at a hospital in London yesterday. He was 72.

One of the pioneers of sports journalism in Bangladesh, Ajoy Barua was in England covering the ICC Cricket World Cup for Bengali daily Sangbad, where he had started his journalism career in 1974 and served as its sports editor till his death.
He was admitted to the King George Hospital in London on June 23 after falling sick before being transferred to Saint Barts Hospital with pneumonia, heart disease and other ailments. Ajoy Barua suffered brain haemorrhage on July 8 as his condition continued to worsen. He breathed his last at the hospital at 7:20am (Bangladesh time) on Friday.
Born in 1947 in Chittagong, Ajoy Barua studied at the University of Dhaka and was honoured as a Blue for his sporting achievements. He also actively participated in the War of Independence.
“Ajoy was a talented individual. He chose sports journalism due to his sheer passion for sports. He came into the profession at a time when there was hardly any scope to take it as a full-time profession. He was one of the very few who did sports journalism at that time,” reminisced cricket coach and sports writer Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury.
Ajoy Barua was one of the founding members of Bangladesh Sports Journalists’ Association.
