Baki fails to earn Olympics quota

Two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist shooter Abdullah Hel Baki wasted his last chance to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as the 30-year-old failed to make it to the eight-man final round in 10m air rifle event of the ongoing 14th Asian Shooting Championships in Doha on Tuesday.

Baki finished 17th among 59 shooters after scoring 623.1 points, 2.6 points less than the eighth shooter. Baki will now rely on wild card to take part in the Olympics like last two editions.

Three shooters of the event secured tickets to Tokyo 2020. They are: third-place finisher Deepak Kumar of India, fifth-place finisher LU Shao-Chua of Chinese Taipei and sixth-place finisher Endoh of Japan. The first, second and fourth place finishers of this event had already qualified for the 2020 Olympics.

Rabbi Hasan Munna finished 43rd in the same event with a score 614.3 points while Syeda Atkia Hasan finished 21st in women’s 10m air rifle event after scoring 622.5 points, 5.4 points less than the last shooter who moved into the final round.

Baki, paring with Atkia, also failed to produce good results as they finished 11th among 36 pairs in mixed event by scoring 622.1 points.
