The shining stars at two of Italy's biggest clubs, Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi and Juventus' rising star Paulo Dybala may not get a chance to represent Argentina at the World Cup, according to coach Jorge Sampaoli.
Argentina struggled through qualifying -- only a Lionel Messi hattrick in the final qualifier took them through to the showpiece event -- and much of their woes were blamed on the forward duo.
Dybala has missed portions of this season through injury, but he has impressed for the Old Lady whenever given the chance. He has 21 goals in 35 appearances this season, but Sampaoli believes he simply does not fit into La Albiceleste's system, perhaps because he often occupies the space that talisman Messi occupies.
Although Dybala has featured in all of Sampaoli's teams thus far, he has just one assist to show, that too against Singapore, from six games.
"It is complicated for Dybala to get used to our system," Sampaoli was quoted as saying by Spanish outlet AS. "We couldn't improve his performances and we have to evaluate if the current players [in this squad] are better than Paulo or if we have to keep working with Paulo to improve his performance.
Icardi has been enjoying an extended purple patch in the Serie A this season and took his tally for the season to 22 with a four-goal haul against Sampdoria on Sunday. He has also reportedly drawn considerable interest from Real Madrid but Sampaoli remains unimpressed.
The 58-year-old has picked Icardi just thrice for the national side and the striker failed to impress. And Sampaoli's words will not inspire much confidence in the 25-year-old.
"Icardi's situation is similar to Dybala's. The transition of Icardi's performance from Inter to Argentina weren't the best. I considered it and felt that we have to work better, but we don't have enough time. Maybe his adaptation time is not a short time. I don't dismiss him, but, as Argentina's coach I have to focus on performances in the field."
