India's Leander Paes set a new Davis Cup record on Saturday when he notched up the 43rd doubles win of his 28-year career in the competition.

Paes, 44, teamed up with Rohan Bopanna to overcome China's Gong Mao Xin and Zhang Ze 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/3) in the tie in Tianjin to overtake Italy's Nicola Pietrangeli as the Davis Cup's most successful doubles player.

He has also won 18 doubles titles at the Grand Slams -- eight in men's and 10 in mixed.

"At this pace @leander will be unstoppable. Congratulations on becoming the most successful doubles player ever in Davis Cup," tweeted India's cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar.

India won the weekend tie against China 3-2 to qualify for the World Group play-offs later this year.
