Pocheon Citizen FC confirmed their semifinal berth after securing a 1-1 draw against TC Sports Club in their Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup encounter at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong yesterday.
A second successive draw meant Pocheon finished Group A as runners-up with five points, while TC Sports Club, who had already confirmed their semifinal spot with a game in hand, finished top of the group with seven points.
The result also leave’s the second match of the as an academic affair where Dhaka Abahani and FC Alga will be playing for pride.
Pocheon, who came into the match after a goalless draw against Dhaka Abahani, needed just a draw to secure a semifinal place and they looked determined to put their performance against Abahani behind them.
From the outset, South Korean side Pocheon controlled the game with their crisp passing football. They came close to breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute, but Kwak Sung Whan failed to beat goalkeeper Limbu Kiran Kumar in a one-on-one situation before Park Seng Ryeol’s volley from inside the box was well gripped by the Maldivian outfit’s goalkeeper.
TC Sports Club took the lead against the run of play in added time of the first half when Stewart Conelius Ezekiel latched onto a through-ball and darted into the box before placing an angled shot into the far-post.
After resumption, Pocheon pressed for the equaliser to stay alive in the tournament and finally struck in the 76th minute, but not before surviving a scare.
Ibrahim Mabudhee Hussain squandered an opportunity to put the game to bed in the 69th minute, failing to beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation before Park Jung Soo levelled the game after substitute Ko Ji Man hit the post from the spot.
