As the debate over Lionel Messi's place in the pantheon of football greats rages, Argentine teammate Angel Di Maria believes that the Barcelona superstar has already proven everything to cement the very top spot for himself.
The one mark against Messi remains the fact that he remains without a World Cup, something Pele, as part of one of the greatest teams in football, has claimed thrice. The other consensus candidate for the spot, Diego Maradona, led Argentina to glory almost single-handedly in Mexico in 1986.
Despite having achieved almost everything in the game, both individually and as the centrepiece of a star-studded Barcelona side, the lack of international success continues to keep the debate flowing. But according to Di Maria, there is no debate.
"Messi is already the greatest player ever. Winning a World Cup would confirm that, but he's already the best," said Di Maria, before adding that the diminutive attacker was the one who made Argentina one of the favourites for the trophy.
"Argentina are always among the favourites for the tournament and that'll be the same this summer. That's mainly because we have Messi. There are also other teams at a high level such as Spain or France but Argentina are among the best."
