The curtains have lifted on the biggest sporting festival in the world -- the Fifa World Cup taking place in Qatar.

The football extravaganza this year will comprise 64 matches and the winners will be crowned world champions at the Lusail Stadium after the final on December 18.

And if you are wondering what other perks the winners will enjoy, other than world football glory, then look no further.

This year's champions are set to take home a whopping $42 million while the runners-up will be awarded $30 million for making it to the final, reports multiple news outlets including WION News.

Qatar, the first middle-eastern country to host a football World Cup, has invested heavily in infrastructure to accommodate millions of fans who will be visiting the country over the course of the tournament.

According to Bloomberg, Qatar has invested around $300 billion making this World Cup the most expensive in football history.

Teams finishing third and fourth will also not leave empty-handed as they will get to take home a sum of $27 million and $25 million, respectively, WION News adds.

Those finishing between the fifth and eighth spots will be awarded a sum of $17 million each while those finishing between ninth and 16th spots will take home $13 million each. The rest of the teams will be awarded $9 million each for participating in the tournament.
