The world cup final at a glance

The World Cup started in breathtaking fashion as members of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment display team delivered the match ball. In attendance were many famous names. Pictured here are Carribean legends Brian Lara and Clive Lloyd alongside Australia legend Steve Waugh. There were crowds elsewhere too, with Trafalgar Square in central London filled to the brim.

Martin Guptill started the final in destructive fashion, hitting Jofra Archer out of the park for a huge six in the fourth over. However, he would depart three overs later for 19 -- one of Chris Woakes’ three victims on the day -- to compound his batting woes. PHOTO: REUTERS

In the 23rd over, the hosts broke New Zealand’s resistance by getting rid of their most crucial cog. England captain Eoin Morgan (bellow) signalled for a review after the umpire was unmoved following the slightest of edges and the decision was overturned, sending Kiwi captain Kane Williamson back to look on from the Lord’s stands.
