85-year-old gets first home after living on a boat for 14 years

Golapi Begum, an 85 year old, has been living on a boat for over 14 years. Now, in her advanced years, she finally has a house of her own.

Golapi Begum's whole life has been marked by struggles and loss. Thirty years ago she lost her husband, and constant conflict with her daughter-in-law forced her to leave her son's home. She started to live in a slum in Dhaka. Her son Nuru Mia could not endure her lone struggles and brought her back to the village. But since he did not have any land or house, a boat became her home.

All that changed after the Ashrayan-2 initiative by the government.
