Why is public transportation on the decline?
Registration of new buses and minibuses, the primary mode of public transportation in the country, has almost halved during the last one year. A single bus can carry passengers equivalent to fifteen to twenty private cars, and that makes them the preferable mode of public transport. However, in Dhaka private cars occupy the majority of the streets.
So, why is public transport in decline both in numbers and in service quality? What can the government do to develop a reliable and popular public transport system to counter the surge of private cars?
In Straight from Star Newsroom, Debjani Shyama is joined by The Daily Star reporter Tuhin Shubhra Adhikary to discuss the present state and the future prospect of public transportation in Bangladesh.
