May you rest in peace

The biggest challenge with Fahim was to introduce new people to him, for he knew most of them. Fahim thrived among friends and he was seldom without them, and they in turn loved him, evidence of which was aplenty, as hundreds wept like children at the news of his passing away. He joined when we were weak and vulnerable and left us a winner on all counts.

We will be missing you until the day we will be missed by somebody else. You were unique. I am yet to come across a guy so full of fun and yet so thoroughly professional as you were. Someday in some other world we will again lunch together, Chief.

Sharier Khan
Deputy Editor
Fahim bhai will always remain in my heart as a man with smiles and as a man who could handle any difficult situation with a smile. The Daily Star's major growth coincided with his joining the newspaper. That clearly shows that he was truly a capable Managing Editor who helped solidify the financial position of the paper. Long live his spirit.

Aasha Mehreen Amin
Deputy Editor, Editorial
As our Managing Editor he was like our ombudsman, someone we could go to with a problem knowing he would definitely find a solution, whether it was getting a broken computer fixed or dealing with an angry writer whose name had been misspelt. Straight forward with a no nonsense attitude, he was amicable yet assertive, friendly but professional – 'most of all, he always got the job done.

As being a 'Syed', we belonged to a different league! A perfectly-dressed Fahim Bhai said with laughter some 20 years back when we first met at our Dhanmondi office. It's neither a joke nor a serious statement. But he made his point casually clear: he is unlike any other.
Our needs were taken care of even before we thought of. The man who was supposed to be the most unpopular for nature of his job actually won over all.
He became the delight of The Daily Star. And with him gone is that D-factor.

I'll never forget the ever-smiling face of Fahim Bhai. I am honoured and blessed to have worked with such a wonderful person.

Arun Devnath

Fahim Bhai showed tremendous interest in news, in addition to his own assignment to make our newspaper profitable. A combination of both put him among the rarest of professionals in the newspaper industry.

Fahim Bhai was very professional in many aspects of his life. But when it came to sport he was absolutely passionate and his love for The Daily Star Sport section benefitted us most.

I lost one of my mentors who was always well dressed, had a smiling face and was such a wonderful person to work for. In my eyes, he was one of the best administrators in media industry.

As they say good souls die young. Tipu bhai's early demise is a great loss for those of us who've been always blessed by this great fountain of love and affection that he was. He was an amicable, kind-hearted, good soul in every sense of the term.

M ABUL KALAM AZAD
Chief Reporter
Although I joined The Daily Star as its Dhaka University correspondent in 1999 it took four years to meet and talk with Tipu Bhai. I first encountered him at the Star's Karwan Bazar office. I was thinking how he would be with me but surprisingly he welcomed me to his room with a smile. He didn't only listen to my problem but also encouraged me to work seriously if I wanted to be a good reporter. He was easy-going, welcoming and, above all, he was friendly.

Pinaki Roy
Chief Reporter, Country
We have lost one of the most smart media personalities.

Ahmed Ali

One of the best media managers. Extremely capable. Man of multiple talents. Full of life and humour, even in difficult situations. Will be missed immensely in the industry for sure.

Ahmede Hussain

An amazing person who always greets his colleagues with a smile, yet a taskmaster, who never shied away from pointing it out when he catches you on the wrong foot.

Elita Karim
Editor, Star Weekend
Losing Mr Fahim Munaim is no less than losing a guardian and a mentor. He has practically seen me grow -- not only as a journalist but also a human being. I remember him as a person who I could go to with any questions or problem. May the Almighty give us all strength to bear with this unbearable pain.

Karim Waheed

RIP Fahim Bhai, the former Managing Editor whose eagle eye and killer sense of humour thoroughly impressed a newbie. He was the kind of man who could tell you that your writing was garbage and make you laugh. Not many like him in the Bangladeshi news media. An irreparable loss.

Robin Gazi
Sr Sub-Editor
I was a kid just out from my university and Fahim Bhai put his hand on my shoulder standing next to me, he explained to me how the paper worked and expressed his confidence that I was more than capable to do my job.
A 3-minute chat with the big brother changed everything. His words of wisdom to a freshman at The Daily Star is something I will always remember him by.

Shahtub Siddique Anik

Your smile will be missed.

It was most probably 2009. My mother was admitted to a hospital due to her illness. As it was taking long time for her recovery, I was facing financial problem to continue her treatment. With no alternatives, I applied for a loan of an amount I was not eligible for as a newcomer, yet he granted it considering the ailment of my mother. I pray from my heart for Fahim Bhai who was really very kind, friendly and loving to his office colleagues.

Porimol Palma
Sr Reporter
Fahim Bhai was a man who instilled cheers into others. Whenever I met him, he extended his hand for a shake and asked how I was doing. And, his smiling face said: "Never worry. Go on." He never forgot to mention and congratulate on any good story. Your memory would be a source of inspiration, Fahim Bhai! I know you will be in the world of happiness and peace.

Fahim Bhai had a special attention to sport. Every day he read the sport pages carefully and corrected the mistakes and made suggestions on how to improve the page and make it more reader-friendly.

Fahim gave his best years to The Daily Star, leaving his indelible imprint on a crucial phase of its evolution. His professionalism, positive outlook and above all camaraderie will be sorely missed in the media world.

Syed Badrul Ahsan
Former Executive Editor
There was the smile in his eyes. He was smiling when we first met in the very early 1990s. At the Morning Sun, at The Daily Star, at Machhranga, the smile was all. In it was his story. In his smile was his celebration of life.

AFM jAMALUDDIN
fORMER GM (ADMIN)
I had the rare honour and privilege of working intimately with Fahim Bhai for many years since the day he joined The Daily Star. As the 2nd person in charge of administration, I had the opportunity of working and inter-acting with him everyday. As a matter of fact, we (the managers of admin, advertisement and accounts) had fixed daily meetings with Fahim Bhai every morning from 11am to discuss our professional work and take his guidance and decisions on these matters. It was during these years of intimate relationship that I realised what a wonderful and unique person he was. He was a person with many varied talents.
With the passing away of Fahim Bhai, I am poorer by losing a brother and a truly well-wisher of my family. May God grant him eternal peace in Heaven.

Zayadul Ahsan Pintu
Ex-Chief Reporter
Respect, honour and affection – combining these three, he was a master weaver of relationships.

Ashfaq Wares Khan
Former Reporter
Fahim Bhai always brought calm amid the chaos of our newsroom. His warmth, encouragement and disarming personality were a rare source of comfort and confidence for a young reporter in an unforgiving industry. He gave us the financial spine for those rare compliments from other newsrooms: "Star's reporters always get paid on time." You'll always be with us, Fahim Bhai.

Nafid Imran Ahmed
Former IT chief
In the 11 years I've worked with him, every step of the way he used to teach me little things that I apply to my work almost every single day. He was a great mentor, a colleague with one of the wittiest sense of humour. A proactive leader who strengthened Star's backbone at a time when every other newspaper was struggling to survive. Wherever you are Fahim Bhai, you will always be in our hearts.

Rakib Hasnet Suman
Former DS reporter (Now with BBC)
Fahim Bhai was a big hearted personality who knew how to inspire and appreciate young colleagues.
