The government must phase out inefficient power plants, rethink energy policy

Bangladesh has started to receive about 750 megawatts of electricity from the Adani power plant in India yesterday, putting to bed the suspense surrounding the start of the cross-border transmission.

"The government has signed a power contract with India's Adani Group. Everyone at home and abroad is saying that this is an unnecessary and unfair deal"

The Daily Star contacted Adani Group for clarifications on certain aspects of the PPA and we are publishing the emailed comment from the Adani Group headquarters in Ahmedabad in India ad verbatim.

"It is a punishable offence to sign such a contract -- we believe that our agencies have the ability to identify the corruption in this deal"

Adani’s inclusion of costs that appear to be non-existent may allow Bangladesh to claim the deal invalid.

It is inconceivable that Bangladesh should have voluntarily entered an agreement so detrimental to the nation and its people, who must ultimately shoulder the burden of higher prices.
