England finally saw off Angelo Mathews as they pressed for victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Old Trafford on Friday.

Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has apologised for the squad’s poor performance at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, acknowledging the team’s regret for disappointing the hopes of both the nation and the team.

Sri Lankan All-rounder Kamindu Mendis and compatriot Angelo Mathews made sizable jumps in the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, helping their side to a thumping 192-run victory away from home, and completing a 2-0 series sweep in their ICC World Test Championship series.

The unprecedented 'Timed out' dismissal of Angelo Matthews may have been the key talking point during Sri Lanka innings, but Bangladesh bowlers did enough to make their presence felt on a batting-friendly Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi yesterday.

Mathews was adjudged to be timed out after failing to take strike at the crease within the two-minute time limit.

“Forget the spirit of the game, forget the law, how does a fair minded cricketer even think to appeal for this type of dismissal let alone actually carry it out.”

Mathews had Dawid Malan caught behind after the opener had made a brisk 28 with defending champions England on 45-1 at the time.
