Umar is and will be remembered today as a committed and uncompromising icon of the left.

Always a voice against the ruling class, Badruddin Umar was a fierce critic of the post-1971 regime of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He was a true scholar, a delightful conversationalist, and an uncompromising social activist.

Badruddin Umar, the eminent public intellectual, historian, and political activist, passed away in Dhaka yesterday at the age of 94. He breathed his last at Bangladesh Specialised Hospital, Shyamoli, around 10:05am. He was suffering from old-age complications.

Teacher, comrade, and lifelong revolutionary Badruddin Umar (20 December 1931 – 7 September 2025) is no more. We offer him our deepest respect and love. Alongside this, on behalf of the people of Bangladesh, we convey our gratitude — for he devoted his entire life, thought, and activism to the cause of the people.

The three-part book, “Purbo Banglar Bhasha Andolan O Tatkaleen Rajneeti”, by Badruddin Umar is considered a key document of Language Movement history. The renowned researcher, writer, theorist and communist leader recently discussed the 1952 movement, the use of Bangla and different other matters with Star’s Ahmad Istiak.     

How writers and their consciousness evolve in a country is largely dependent on that society’s intellectual development, their freedom of expression, and if their intellectual development is encouraged or discouraged.
