Members of the cabinet committee on law and order yesterday came down heavily on police for torturing a Bangladesh Bank official and a staff of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), saying those incidents had tarnished the image of the department.

Three cops including a sub-inspector of Uttara Pashchim Police Station are suspended over allegation of harassing a businessman and taking extortion money from him on Sunday night.

A full bench of the Supreme Court may decide on Monday whether the written complaint by Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabby would be recorded as a case against the police personnel who allegedly tortured him.

The High Court yesterday observed that Sub-inspector Masud Shikder of Mohammadpur Police Station should be dismissed from service as suspension is not enough for detaining and torturing Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabbi.
