The closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar, a power plant that has dominated the surrounding central England landscape for nearly 60 years, marks a symbolic step in the UK's ambition to decarbonise electricity by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050.

The Barapukuria 525MW coal-fired power plant may be mothballed once its current stock of coal is depleted later this month due to uncertainty over the resumption of coal supply from the nearby mine for underground development works.

People of Gondamara in Banshkhali will support installation of a coal-based power plant there only if the plant does not harm the environment, said speakers at a view exchange meeting yesterday.
