As extremely severe cyclone Amphan is set to make landfall, forest authorities in West Bengal, India keep a close watch on the protection of Royal Bengal tigers in the Sundarbans.

When Bangladesh is struggling to fight against the deadly coronavirus pandemic, another catastrophe is heading towards the country’s coastal areas in the form of super cyclone Amphan, bringing a double blow to the impoverished people as well as the economy of the nation.

The super cyclone Amphan is likely to make landfall in Bangladesh tomorrow afternoon.

District administration in Chattogram started evacuating people from five vulnerable upazilas since this morning to combat the strongest cyclone, Amphan, ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has suspended ferry services on different routes due to super cyclone Amphan, which is likely to hit Bangladesh by Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Some 303 medical teams and 26,213 volunteers are ready in three coastal districts -- Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira -- to face any situation over super cyclone storm Amphan.

All the vessels anchored at different jetties of Chattogram port have been sent to the deep sea as safety measures ahead of approaching cyclone Amphan.

The super cyclonic storm "Amphan" is laying over west-central Bay and adjoining area and moving north and northeast-wards.

The name of the severe cyclonic storm “Amphan” was decided even before it had formed. It was given by Thailand back in 2004.

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ may cross Bangladesh coast, between Khulna-Chattogram, between Tuesday late night and Wednesday evening.

Cyclone Amphan is likely to intensify into a “very severe” cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours and cross coastal areas between Sagar Islands (West Bengal, India) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) during the afternoon/evening of May 20, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local warning signal number 4 as cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ approaches.
