A fast-track project of the government -- establishment of the country's third deep-sea port proposed at Cox's Bazar's Sonadia -- has plunged into uncertainty.

The sea port being built for the Matarbari coal-fired power plant will be turned into a deep-sea port, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said.

The government today is going to sign the first memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the Payra Deep-sea Port project with Belgian company Jan De Nul for an estimated $2 billion capital dredging and maintenance dredging.

Seven mega development projects by the government are well underway and are expected to have significant positive impact for the country. All of the seven top priority Fast Track Projects costing around $40 billion have now gained pace, although some of them are a few years behind the schedule.
