Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority is going to raise water tariff by 20 percent from July 1 if the government approves its proposal.

The High Court yesterday observed that Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority would get appreciations if it could solve all its issues and supply safe drinking water to citizens.

Water Supply and Sewerage Authority must shoulder the responsibility for supplying polluted water to city dwellers, a platform of people living in the capital’s Jurain, Shyampur and Kadamtali areas said yesterday at a mass hearing.

Citizens have now demanded testing of Wasa water amid criticism over the company’s claim of supplying “100 per cent drinkable water”.

Jurain resident Mizanur Rahman, who came under the spotlight following a unique protest against murky Wasa water on Tuesday, alleged that Wasa officials misbehaved with his family members when they went to his residence to collect water samples yesterday.

City dwellers will have to pay more for using running water from tomorrow as Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) has decided to hike the price by 5 percent only eight months after the previous price increase.
