Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep shock over the loss of many lives and injuries sustained by many in a tragic fire incident at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.

A majority of those injured in the Chattogram depot blasts have suffered eye injuries and many are at risk of permanent vision loss.

After 60 hours, the Bangladesh Army claimed to have brought the deadly fire at Sitakunda BM Container Depot under control.

The UN has said the devastating fire at the BM Container Depot is a reminder of the need to work together towards effective industrial and enterprise safety frameworks and their enforcement.

The fire at BM Container Depot, in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, is still not completely under control.

A team of experts of Criminal Investigation Department has started collecting DNA samples of the deceased in Chattogram container depot fire in order to identify them.

"My husband is at least alive, even if his left hand has been amputated. It means a lot to me that he is still alive," said Nazneen Nahar, wife of Nurul Afsar, who sustained burn injuries in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Saturday night (June 4, 2022).

The charred bodies of 36 fire victims of the fire tragedy at BM Container Depot in Chattogram’s Sitakunda could not be identified by the family members, said Mominur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Chattogram.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment will provide Tk 2 lakh to each family of the people who died in in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila last night, Mominur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Chattogram, had said.

BM Container Depot officials have expressed their condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the fire incident in Chattogram's Sitakunda.

“We were all together after the fire broke out at the container depot. Nayan was the first to go on Facebook live – providing updates on the fire. At one point there was a huge explosion, triggered by the fire. Nayan went silent and the screen went dark,” recalled Ariful Islam, a friend of Oliur Rahman Nayan.

The Chattogram depot fire has once again exposed the severe negligence in the handling of hazardous chemicals in Bangladesh.

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said inquiry will reveal whether Chattogram container depot fire is an accident or sabotage.

Three people injured in the BM Depot fire in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram have been referred to Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute in Dhaka for better treatment.

A woman was seen running around Chittagong Medical College Hospital – holding her 3-year-old daughter in one hand and her 8-year-old son in the other – looking for her husband.

As Chittagong Medical College Hospital’s designated burn unit ran out of space, its gynaecology ward has been turned into a burnt unit for providing treatment to those injured in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila.

Fire Service officials were not informed about the presence of chemicals in the containers at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.

The death toll in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram has gone up to 49 while hundreds of people, including police and fire service personnel sustained burn injuries in the incident.

Bangladesh Army has been requested to engage in controlling the fire that broke out at BM container depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram last night. 

The death toll in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram has increased to 16 while hundreds of people, including police and fire service personnel sustained burn injuries in the incident.
