Worsening floods in Sunamganj and Sylhet districts have resulted in power outages, closure of many schools as they have been turned into makeshift flood shelters, and vast areas being inundated, with locals saying the flood is worse than the ones they experienced in 1998 and 2004.  

Members of Bangladesh Army have been deployed to manage the heavy flooding and its aftermath in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

Reddish water from upstream in Assam, India, has been flowing into the rivers of Rowmari upazila in Kurigram resulting in flooding at 30 villages across three unions.

Over 1.5 million children are at increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition due to extensive flooding in north-eastern Bangladesh, said Unicef Bangladesh in a statement today.

Around 657 kilometres of 153 roads in Sylhet and Suamganj have been submerged due to flood as the water of the river Surma and Kushiyara is still flowing above the danger level.

With three major rivers -- the Surma, Kushiyara and Sari-Gowain -- swelling beyond the danger level, the flood situation in Sylhet district has worsened in seven upazilas and the Sylhet city area.

“Most paddy fields in our village are under water. We are not only facing food shortage but also lacking fodder for our cattle. Had the flood happened after two weeks, we could have harvested at least enough to feed ourselves,”

The government invests a significant amount of public money to construct and repair levees in the haor areas of the country’s north-eastern districts to protect the Boro harvest from the flash floods.

The recent floods in three phases damaged standing crops on 42,055 hectares of land causing production losses of 1,49,416 tonnes of crops worth Taka 499.16 crore this year in Rangpur agriculture region.

Nonstop rain, over the last 12 hours, has caused unprecedented waterlogging in most areas of Rangpur district.

Flood situation in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat has deteriorated further as water of Dharla river is still flowing above the danger level.

Around 30 thousand families of nearly 100 chars, islands and villages of the river basins in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts remained stranded and in waterlogged conditions as a result of the ongoing flood, as the water of the Dharla River flowed 39cm above danger level.

People living on the shoals of rivers and char areas in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram are facing floods for the fourth time this year as rivers are starting to swell again.

The water level has started to increase for the fourth time in Sirajganj, threatening prolonged floods in the district.

"When will we return home, mother?’ eight-year-old Rabbi Islam, a second-grader, asks his mother. “I can’t read here, I want to go home so I can study,’ he says.

Nearly four lakh people in the flood affected regions of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts will be spending Eid-ul-Azha in despair this year.

Bangladesh Water Development Board has warned of a recurrence of the flood in the country.

The flood situation takes a serious turn as the water level of 10 rivers including Teesta and Dharla in Lalmonirhat and 18 rivers including Brahmaputra in Kurigram increases.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) forecasts flash flood in Haor regions of Sunamganj and Sylhet as India’s Meteorological Department predicted excessive rainfall in the north-eastern part of Bangladesh and in the bordering areas of India from April 17 to 20.
