Why cut back on public food distribution programmes when they are needed the most?

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday instructed Bangladesh Bank to intervene if any bank faced a dollar shortage while opening letters of credit for importing food, fertiliser and other agricultural inputs to ensure uninterrupted food supply.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Bangladesh government, is rolling out $1.5 million in emergency food support for 50,000 extremely poor urban families.

Government has taken an initiative to provide food assistance to those who have lost their means of daily income, due to the ongoing 10-day shutdown.
