The Election Commission recommended punishment for 134 officials involved in Gaibandha-5 by-polls after its probe found their involvement in irregularities and negligence in performing duties.

A number of presiding officers have alleged that they were forced by ruling Awami League men to make written statements that Wednesday’s voting in Gaibandha-5 by-polls was free and fair.

EC’s action in Gaibandha-5 on Wednesday was commendable.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said that stopping Gaibandha-5 by-polls was not a “reckless” decision.
