Tahsin had participated in various chess tournaments abroad, accompanied by his father GM Zia, who passed away while playing a chess match in August last year. Ever since, the chess prodigy has been facing financial constraints in participating in overseas tournaments.

It was once a different world for the father-son duo of GM Ziaur Rahman and FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia, who happily travelled the globe together to participate in various chess tournaments.

FIDE Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia, the only son of deceased Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, will represent Bangladesh in the upcoming 45th Chess Olympiad after winning a tie-breaker to finish fifth in the 48th National Chess Championship at the Bangladesh Chess Federation hall room today.

“I had nearly confirmed my championship win with two rounds in hand and was really happy about it. But now I am shocked and can’t find the words to express my emotions after the death of my beloved Zia sir,” Neer told The Daily Star yesterday.

I still can’t believe that I won’t get to hear Zia’s deep voice, his jokes and laughter anymore. His death has left a huge gap. He had become an inseparable part of our chess community.

“A friendly, big-hearted person, his simplicity, strong ethics and sincerity always inspired us," said Bangladesh’s fourth GM Abdullah Al Rakib.

Zia suddenly fell to the ground midway during a game against GM Enamul Hossain Razib at the Bangladesh Chess Federation Hall room at around 5:45 pm.
