The beginning of Ramadan is when city dwellers enjoy less chaotic traffic on streets but yesterday, the first day of the holy month, people endured standstill traffic for hours in downtown Dhaka as agitating hawkers blocked several roads in Gulistan.

Tuesday's mayhem in Narayanganj was all about money.

In sequel to yesterday, shop owners of Dhaka Trade Centre mall and hawkers have clashed again in capital’s Gulistan area. At least 50 including a top police official have been hurt. About 150 have been detained.

Hawkers will be allowed to sit on footpaths at Gulistan in Dhaka without giving any toll from now, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said today.

The two Dhaka city corporations are set to clear footpaths from July 1. That the small-scale eviction drive in Gulistan on June 2 fizzled out was a foregone conclusion.
